Came here because of the good reviews but it seems like the few one stars are a more accurate representation. Place was pretty quiet when we ordered but still took over 35 minutes for our three takeaway 3 drinks to be made. The younger waitress was lovely but her grandmother kept visibly pushing our orders to the back of the queue because she “didn’t want to make a smoothie” also in the middle of summer the inside is very hot with no fan going.

Went there for breakfast. Lovely atmosphere, amazing coffee and even better sandwiches and croissants.

Served by a lovely lady. Great coffee and delicious gluten-free savoury muffin. Very pleasant ambience. Love the display of food containers, which brought back childhood memories, especially the tea box! Definitely recommend The Peninsular General Store!

Tried to order coffee twice but friendly locals were jumping the queue and took their time talking to the owner. She saw the queue but continued talking with the locals. After about 10 minutes wait, I gave up, twice. Veryannoying experience.

Excellent coffee and nice setting. Coffee came in good time even though they were busy. The milk and shot extraction both perfect. They seem a bit more relaxed about us coming in with several kids and can see they have pushed the retail aisles back to make a bit more floor space. Pretty rotten that CCC are being fun police over the sidewalk seating. Best in Akaroa.

Gluten Free savoury muffins, suitable for Coeliacs, where you will cherish every bite. Cute cafe with gluten free muffin & a few other yummy options for lunch. This was the only cafe in Akaora that I could find something gluten free for lunch that wasn’t sweet & full of sugar. I’ll definitely be back.

Cute little shop with nice baking and coffee. I get everyone is understaffed at the moment but the young girl taking orders wouldn’t even speak to us and seemed annoyed we were there! An older lady came out and was really personable and friendly and saved the experience.

Although you can't go wrong when it comes to food or shopping in Akaroa, The Brasserie delivers when it comes to atmosphere, food and service. First time being here for a breakfast and immediately fell in love. The seating, decorations, style, atmosphere and personality this place had is top notch. Definitely recommended and can't wait to go back for more!

This place is so beautiful! We sat outside in the beautiful garden surrounded my plants and ferna.I ordered an iced latte and my partner got an iced espresso. They were both really good and served in cute little whisky glasses. The service was also really great, our server was super helpful and polite! We didn’t try any of the food here this time but I’m excited to try some next time. I would definitely come here again even if it was just to sit in the garden. The atmosphere here is what really makes this place great it feels so relaxing and tranquil!

Great place for lunch, many outdoor seats available. Fish and chips are delicious with nice salads with it.

We had bacon and eggs plus pancakes. Very nice all round, bacon was cooked to perfection and a generous portion .

Charming little spot with outdoor garden seating. It's located in the bay town of Akaroa. Love their outdoor seating. Gives me neighborhood backyard vibes.The food was fresh and nicely portioned.Both their lunch and breakfast menu had vegetarian options.I ordered the Benedict eggs. Poached egg was yums! The roasted mushrooms were meaty and seasoned well. Highly recommend.

Beautiful setting, attentive staff, timely food delivery and the food was really delicious. Well worth a visit.

The risotto was so delicious. The setting also quaint. We sat outside which seems to be the main setting. All tables were full when we arrived and we were told to sit down and someone would take our order but noone came so we went inside again. The order took a while and they missed the drinks so we went inside again. I would go back but unfortunately the service doesn't match the quality of the food. I'm sure if it wasn't as busy they would do better.

We had late lunch at The Brassiere. Outdoor seats in the garden. Waitress lady is very helpful and friendly. Their fish and chips are yummy. We had good experience. Please note that they do charge the credit card surcharge. Also be careful with your food as there are few birds in the garden and they can grab your food if you leave the food unattended.

I’d have a hard time giving this anything less than 5 stars, the service was great and very sympathic, you have to be patient and the food is very good. Although you can't go wrong when it comes to food in Akaroa, The Brasserie delivers when it comes to atmosphere, food and service. First time being here for lunch and immediately fell in love.

Yummy! Lots of options, good seating. Atmosphere a bit lacking, maybe it was nice the night we were there. Bit too much mock cream for my liking, but easy to put to one side.

Waffles were disappointing. The Barries used were frozen (even tho they are in season) which made the waffles cold and soggy in return :(

This waffles was hands down the best waffles Ive ever had!! It was soft and fluffy but not soggy. The flavours was amazing together and the price was reasonable!

Lady that served us is maybe not cut out for a business that has to deal with customers, doesn't matter how busy you are. Happened 2 days in a row. Luckily the guy working there was excellent with the customers.

Never had a Waffle before so a first for us . Outside area with a few table's clean and tidy . Order ready within 15minutes . And boy it was delicious .

In winter it moves to Crater Cafe, which we were unaware of. Staff were friendly enough but may have been overcharged ($31 for two waffles?). Good food.

This place is good they have some awesome waffles pictures show a death by chocolate lemon berry and the empty plate of a waffle monkey its worth the visit here if you are in akora the price is great and they have bottomless filter coffee for 5 dollars (ps.they are also available in new regent street Christchurch)

When in Akaroa - do seek out the Waffle Haus! Delicious, well-made waffles to enjoy in the cute-as-a-button garden centre. Ordering process is delightfully kiwi - instead of ordering at the window, head inside to the hardware store and order there! Will be a wait during busy times, but worth it.

Quaint little area to eat, the waffles were yummy. The service was great, recommend this place for a quiet chilled out snack place.

One of the best to have some sweet in Akaroa. The waffle was so good that we did manage to finish it sooner than the time they took to prepare. Couldn't have expected any better than this. Also the working staff was polite. They have a little shop inside selling various things. I would surely recommend this place for awesome waffles.

Stopped for lunch with family from overseas. We had a lovely vegetarian pizza, Sweet potato and a crepe, wine and beer. All very nice. Bloke that served us didnt have much of a personality and might need to improve his customer service skills.

The worse coffee and iced latte we’ve ever had! Also a very rude lady in the counter. When we asked her that why our iced latte was so sweet and full of cream and powder!!!?? She replied “that’s how we do it here!!!”So sorry for you guys! So unprofessional!

Place was nice and had pan pizza. I ordered two fish tacos and two orange juice takeaway on 29/12/2022. The amount they changed was more than the total on web. They changed me 44$. When I opened it, they had 4 tacos instead, which is not the amount I ordered. So they have overcharged me. Onsite parking was available. They were busy.

What a view! The best pub garden view I have ever seen. The food was quick and pretty good although pricey for what it was. The inside of the pub and the garden could do with some investment or just some love, could probably triple the food business i reckon

Best view for lunch in Canterbury is here!A picturesque, relaxing stop, for lunch or coffee on the way to Akaroa or for a an hours road trip from Christchurch.Easy parking, friendly staff and always good food, a pool table and seating outside to soak up the amazing view of Akaroa Harbour.The beer battered fresh fish and chips are delish and a lemon, lime and bitters to go with it.Only thing I would recommend changing for pure comfort reasons, is the small, short height child size school chairs that are hard, and uncomfortable to sit on for an average height male and tall female.Other than that, the tavern has a lovely relaxed chill vibe.

Walked in about half full asked how long a wait for food got an honest answer 'no wait on pizza' ordered pizza and bam five mins later hot pizza and chips being served. Friendly service great views

Unfortunately hard to say something about the tavern itself. We were passing through and had our two little dogs with us, so we had a takeaway coffee only. The view from there is absolutely stunning.

First and last time coming here. Heard many good things but the pizza’s we received were overly cheesy, oily, and made hastily.Chicken, cranberry, and brie pizza (pictured) had no brie obviously present.The glasses for water were still dirty, including a lipstick stain.Service was okay. Had to pay before you dine.

Do you believe this is a flat white? Big bubble and thick froth. First one is cold , maybe 30 degrees and didn’t hear milk steaming. Ask the other staff to make a new one. Like picture showing.a burned coffee. Yuck. Service is unfriendly no smile at all. So disappointed we were looking forward to this cafe.

Great place for a light breakfast . We didn't want anything too big. Nice hot coffee. Yummy croissants. Friendly staff. Lots of tradies coming on for their morning coffee and snacks

We had different cakes and everyone of them was delicious. The latte I had was perfect. Above all, the smiley friendly faces servicing you are refreshing.

Small and cozy local bakery cafe. I only tried the coffee which taste good. It looks like that they also serve nice quick lunch and cakes. Price wise reasonable for the location.

As french I was expecting a typical "french breakfast" and I've been completely disappointed.The staff was not friendly and I'd say even rude. The location is OK but not that many choice for the food and not high quality.I wouldn't recommend it maybe for a coffee but I haven't tried so I can not tell.

The coffee was terrible - it didn’t taste right - maybe the filter needed changing? Lots of gf food options & great cabinet selection but very odd aside from that. No customer toilet bit allowed us to use the facility out the back - very awkward getting in & out the door & I got locked outside.New staff who couldn’t answer any questions but service was fairly prompt. This place is lovely, we went for breakfast, lunch a dinner once each over three days in Akaroa. It was so easy to keep coming back. We absolutely loved all the dogs around. The food was incredible, we especially recommend the green curry and salmon pad cha. The pastries were also amazing. We had the same super friendly waitress all three times we went.

It is not cheap. But worth the price. Food was really tasty and great. But , their dirty chai I had, the hot chocolate wasn't as good as their food, but never complaining. V tried two breakfast items on the menu, Avocado smash and Eggs your way (scrambled). Those were delicious and real good. V both highly enjoyed our meals. Outdoor seating are available too. Definitely recommend there. I visited there on 29/12/2022. Service was good too. They were really busy that day. I believe they would be too.

We recently dined at The Common for dinner and had a mixed experience. Despite the restaurant being crowded, the staff seemed understaffed, leading to some confusion with the orders. The waiter mistakenly served us food intended for other customers. Additionally, the coffee I ordered was not served until the end of our meal, so I had to take it home.On the positive side, the food itself was delicious. We particularly enjoyed the pan-seared scallops and pan-seared salmon; they were cooked to perfection. Another highlight was the availability of toys for children, which kept our toddler entertained throughout the meal.Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience in terms of food quality and the availability of toys for our child. We hope that in the future, The Common addresses the staffing concern to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable dining experience.We would definitely still consider visiting again when we find ourselves in Akaroa.

We got the Chicken Hana and the Salmon Larb which were both great, tasty and quick. Coffee was yum too. Definitely coming back for that larb again next time I'm around, it was delicious

Just wanted to shout out to the incredible team at The Common Akaroa. They very kindly delivered a muffin and coffee to my mum working nearby on her birthday- made both her and my day as I couldn’t be with her to celebrate. Super friendly and the food there is always delicious. My favourite cafe in Akaroa by far- highly recommend this place to all. Added bonus is the doggie photo wall!

Went here for lunch with my partner. We were recommended by a local in the street and it did not disappoint! I chose the chicken burger and my partner had the pad Thai. Food was amazing, the chicken burger was quite possibly the best I’ve ever had. I would definitely come back!

I came to this cafe a couple of times during its opening week. Best cup of coffee in Akaroa, in my opinion. Usually come for the coffee which is still good. Today decided to try some cabinet food. Bacon and egg roll. Three small pieces of strip bacon which was really three strips of bacon fat. I returned the rolls but was told by staff that there is no replacement because they all have the same fatty strip bacon. So no hunger satisfaction here.They were only $10 each and I would be happy to pay more for better quality. Unacceptable to serve these rolls with up to 2cm wide strips of fat, reminds me of my Mum telling me about the bread and dripping sandwiches they had at school during the depression. Come on team, lift your game a little. Photo shows a reasonable piece beside the rubbish bacon. Not all strip bacon is created equal

Excellent breakfast choice with free street parking nearby.The berry pancakes with mascarpone and the salmon omelette were splendid. Came on Easter Saturday, they were busy but the owner was great he managed to find us a table. We decided to order cabinet food and hot chips which was very nice but got food envy when the table next to us got the chicken burger and chips from the menu and oh my it looked amazing! Love the cute souvenir Nz teaspoons served with my hot chocolate. Go try and find the toilet, it’s behind the bookshelf door which is cool, loved the birds signing in there. Really enjoyed listening to the live music, as well, she sing beautifully.Must visit if in Akaroa!

Popped into the common for a family brunch this morning, food and service was delightful. The coffee and cabinet food is exceptional, we ordered menu food as well which was fantastic! We ended up back there for dinner, highly recommend the Pad Thai 🤩

What an adorable little cinema! We loved this place - bought a coffee, popcorn, and a sweet treat to enjoy during the show. The reusable popcorn containers were a sweet touch to this place! The seats were clean and comfortable. Would definitely return!

Can’t speak highly enough of Ethel’s cinema and cafe. There are two cinema screens and multiple sessions throughout the day. A great website which is easy to navigate and always an interesting variety of films. The cafe offers delicious cabinet food all made on site and amazing pizzas in the evening. Love that you can have a wine and nibble delivered to you in your cinema seat! Definitely worth a visit.

What a find this place is with the most delicious array of food and drinks including alcoholic and the best staff around. The theatre is a real asset to Akaroa and this place is certainly a destination for a coffee and cake and pizza and lots of other yummy goodies. They show the latest movies plus Arthouse selections and they have a large community offering of special showings as well.Love this place and it deserves a visit when in Akaroa if only for the cake of the day and coffee!

Didn't watch a movie here but we did have dinner - the pizzas were great. They used good quality ingredients and tasted delicious. It's a really nice atmosphere in there too.

Visited Ethel's tonight with my son for takeaway pizza hugely exceeded expectations! Despite the chilly winter evening, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality from the moment we arrived to pick up our pizzas. The friendly young assistant even offered us some soft drinks as we waited, allowing us to enjoy the charming nostalgia of old toys and records on display. And wow the pizzas! They were a true masterpiece - impeccably cooked, stone-baked to perfection, and bursting with unique flavours crafted from top-notch ingredients. Never thought I’d admit to this but the Veggy one was outstanding! Without a doubt, we'll be returning and perhaps even catching a movie next time. Thank you, Ethel's, for an unforgettable experience!

Awesome service by staff and the cinema is a good an ideal size with large comfortable seats compared to bigger ones. Row D is an ideal row to sit in with the screen at an appropriate height. Highly recommend 👍😀

Love everything about the place. We had the cheese scone, raspberry chocolate cake and chai latte. Came back a few hours later to see a movie. I had the hot chocolate and it was made to perfection. I highly recommend the place.

Coffee, food, service and ambience are excellent. Is it really necessary to have surcharges on public holidays and on credit card/pay wave. Wouldn't it be better to build those overheads into the everyday prices?

Lovely selection of cabinet food and sweet treats that seems to be changed regularly. Refreshing to see a unique selection of food that is different to generic cafes. Staff are friendly, and the coffee is nice.

Niche is always busy and that is for a good. The quality of food is of a high standard. Especially love toasted scone. Yummy. I go regularly and the staff are excellent and when very busy they rise above it and provide top quality service. If you don't believe me go to Niche and try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Humming cafe, excellent food. Had the pork belly salad and truffle chips and both were delish. Beautiful local art.The seat squabs were absolutely filthy, the tables were sticky. Cute locally owned cafe in Sumner only a couple blocks from the beach! Great coffee and a good selection of breakfast and lunch cabinet and dine-in food. Gluten free options and baking that are delicious ! There are lots on seating options that are good for a group or cozy sit down

Cafe experience is terrible when overrun by large group of cyclists. Staff happy to have cyclists cut the line repeatedly in front of non-cyclist customers. I did speak to a cyclist to let him know where the back of the line was but it didn't mean much to him. It'd be fine if they were paying one bill as a group but they were all ordering and paying individually, like the rest of us who had been waiting our fair turn. The cafe should be leading the way. This used to be my favourite cafe in Sumner but this puts me off now.

Went 2 weeks ago for the first time. Honestly very average food and coffee. The customer service was below average. As soon as we walked in we looked in the cabinet for 1 minute and the older lady behind the counter huffed loudly and walked off and muttered something about us needing longer to decide, like we were putting her out for waiting while we decided.That should have been our first warning sign to leave. Same lady bought out our drinks and food with no enthusiasm. Service with a smile goes a long way.A couple behind us looked like they had an average experience too. Barista made the wrong coffee, so bought out a bottle of chocolate sauce and showed them how to turn their coffee into a mocha. Unbelievable. They should have just remade the coffee like any other cafe would do.Will not be back.

It was Father’s Day afternoon and I wanted to treat my husband with coffee and treats and we stopped by Crater cafe.When we walked into the cafe we haven’t been greeted by staff member( the older lady), we were in a good mood until we started ordering treats for ourselves. The lady was quite rude and impatient, we had to tell her few times about not to put an ice cream in the cone, which eventually she did…Then my husband ordered toasted sandwich, which he was waiting for the whole time we were there. Just before we were about to leave the cafe, she realized she forgot to put sandwich on the hot plate to toast, didn’t apologized or say a word to us🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️, the young guy- staff member was quite polite and urged to tell us about it, we said we wanted a refund as it was too late. The lady didn’t say a word and brought us refund and literally dropped the money on the table and walked away😲😲😲.Won’t be coming back at all. Ruined the whole experience.😟😟😟

We picked up ham and cheese croissants to take away. They were delicious but it took a little while for them to be heated up and they were plated even though we asked for take away. The two plus a bottle of water was $26. They seem to be doing their best and the food really was delicious. I think they just need to communicate more about what the wait will be. There were a few orders brought out to the wrong people and a few others who had to come in to ask how long their order would take. Would be better to just let them know ahead of time.

Cafe is nice, and service was alright. I ordered a $9 iced chocolate and it was good but very small and very overpriced for what I got. Not impressed.

Such a great little find! Awesome customer service, the lentil soup homemade was so tasty and they were super accommodating to my 4 month old. Thanks guys will be back

Grabbed two sandwiches here for takeaway after exploring Akaroa. Server warmed them up for us and we went to the waterfront to eat them. They were delicious! My husband got a piece of carrot cake which he said was the best carrot cake he's ever had. The servers seemed busy but were attentive.
