It's the first time that's happened since April 11, 2016 — 142 weeks ago. According to AAA, the Dearborn-based auto club, the average price for gas today in Michigan is $2.017 a gallon. The lowest is $1.909 a gallon in Saginaw-Bay City-Midland.

The cost to refine gasoline varies between 40 cents and 70 cents per gallon, depending on various factors. The cost to transport the refined oil to service stations runs about 27 cents per gallon. Taxes vary by state.

Beyond the Sun. A gallon of gasoline isn't quite a gallon of gas in the summer, and that has Southern Nevadans in a court battle to get motorists more for their money. As gas heats up, it expands, losing mass and energy. The industry standard for a gallon of gas is 60 degrees.

Petroleum prices are determined by market forces of supply and demand, not individual companies, and the price of crude oil is the primary determinant of the price we pay at the pump.

Fitch Rating's long-term natural gas price forecast on 5 December expected Henry Hub to average $2.75 per 1,000 cubic feet (Mcf) and Dutch TTF to average $5.0/Mcf in 2026 and beyond, dropping from $3/MMBtu and $10/MMBtu in 2025 respectively.

Why prices are up. The sharp rise is a result of growing gas demand and tighter supply. Gas demand jumped from 8.47 million to 9.01 million barrels a day while total domestic gasoline stocks tightened by 4.5 million barrels to 239.7 million barrels.

California continues to lead the nation with the highest gas tax in 2024, which climbs to 69.8 cents per gallon as of July 1. This increase pushes the Golden State's average price for a gallon of regular gasoline to about $4.79. In other tax news, California also has a new gun and ammo tax effective July 1.

Supply of this refined fossil fuel could then approach demand, steadying gasoline prices. Other suggested fixes for the federal government are to enact a “windfall profits tax” on fossil fuel companies; to set price controls on the market; or to use the Defense Production Act to force an increase in refinery output.

Why is this? Gas stations are in fact legally allowed to charge a customer extra if they choose to use a credit card to purchase gas. This is because the gas station owners pay an interchange fee to the payment networks. They often pass this fee on to the consumer to recoup that additional cost.

The most effective solutions are long-term projects, including increasing housing density, building “complete streets,” improving public transport systems and electrifying vehicle fleets.
